Gürcan Karakaş, our CEO answered the questions of Dr. Mustafa AYKUT, Turkcell Board of Directors and CEO Advisor on electrical and autonomous vehicles, connected and smart objects in Turkcell Technology Summit organized on 10 April 2019 in Haliç Congress Center.
Dr. Mustafa Aykut: We have made some explanations on this sense. Here we are talking about electrical, autonomous and network-connected vehicle. However, can you please tell it once again to imagine it. What kind of vehicle you are manufacturing? For example, since majority of the vehicles in the traffic are the conventional ones, how can autonomous ones move? When will TOGG put this vehicle in the market and what will Turkey have with this move?
Gürcan Karakaş: Even though these questions seem to be connected, I can answer them briefly.
What kind of vehicle we are manufacturing?
We are manufacturing a SUV in C segment which will be put into the market at the mid of 2022 which is completely electrical, connected and at the suitable autonomous level for that day’s competition conditions. We are closing to the end in style stage of the vehicle. It will be completed in the following a few days. We are just completing its technical features. We are moving on approximately 1000 features while making this definition. We are realizing the design of electrical and electronic architecture which will be used in our product range already now. The intellectual and industrial property right of this product or legally work will belong to TOGG, namely to Turkey at all.
Before answering the second part of your question on the autonomous vehicles, I would like to remind the autonomous vehicle levels:
Being autonomous or not is related to the intervention of the driver to the vehicle. Such levels are defined between 0 and 5 in the standards:
0. Level / Zero Automation The vehicle is totally under the control of the driver and it only has lane change warning system.
1. Level / Basic Driver Support: Any of the speed or steering control is realized by the vehicle. (For example: Any of the adaptive cruise control or lane keeping)
2. Level / Partial Support: Vehicle can control acceleration / slowdown, braking and direction in some cases. Lane changing, off-ramp are controlled by the driver.
3. Level / Conditional Support: Vehicle can control drive surrounding and change lane. However, it is based on the interruption of the driver when necessary. (For example: Audi A8)
4. Level / High Automation Vehicle can move without driver interruption in particular environment and situations (like particular road type and geographical areas) (For example: Google/Waymo).
5. Level / Full Automation Vehicle can move without any driver interruption in any situation (does not exist in a current vehicle of mass production)
While the control of the vehicle belongs to the driver until the Level 3, after that level the control is under the vehicle. We are developing our first vehicle for 3. Level autonomous drive to be ready in 2022. Since the hardware part will be taken care of when a vehicle in 3 level is developed, reaching to 4. Level for that vehicle will only depend on the infrastructure of the provinces, regulation and road data. Of course, the software which will drive these vehicles should be developed.
New generation network-connected autonomous vehicles and old generation non-connected autonomous vehicles and old generation vehicles will live all together until they run out of their
Economic lifetime. Until the regulative institutions prepare the necessary infrastructure in this sense the vehicles will continue to be under the control of drivers.
TOGG will carry the capacities in software and integration in our country while developing the mobility ecosystem. New start-ups to emerge in the ecosystem will produce technology and therefore, a new platform will be created to develop technology in our country. This platform is of strategically importance as a technological transformation project which can lead to our country in the participation among the developed countries in automotive industry transformation. If we interpret this situation via numbers, the contribution to the gross national product within 15 years is 50 billion euros and positive contribution to the current account deficit is 7 billion euros and contribution to the employment directly or indirectly will be around 20 thousands of people. I would like to state that we have not included the other gainings to be obtained from the ecosystem in this calculation.
We have mentioned that we are not considering this just as an automobile project. We have always said that “we have launched it for beyond the automobiles”. We are manufacturing a smart vehicle and this smart vehicle will be the product of a smart factory. We are launching the design and construction of this smart factory within this year.
Dr. Mustafa Aykut: It is claimed that the vehicles will be 4-whell-smart vehicles in the future. The vehicles, objects, buildings, provinces will connect to each other. How will the harmonized coordination of such complicated system be? What kind of new services and business models will merge in the environment around such smart automobiles?
Gürcan Karakaş: We define this as the ‘transformation of the vehicles into smart devices’. Today the internet is included in the automobile but the automobiles will be included in the internet within a short time. We will experience the transformation in mobility which we have experienced in smart phones.
Three mega trends which affect the period in which we live technologically, socially and legally. The vehicles transform and turns into an electrical, autonomous and network-connected version in the field affected by the technology. Accordingly, the share economy, smart residents, smart buildings and smart provinces welcome us in the social area.
Emission rates which are decreasing gradually force the classical manufacturers in the European continent for a fast transformation. However, transformation of such brands which have been carrying out manufacture for more than 100 years cannot be that fast.
I should share this important information here that we will be the only non-classical manufacturer to manufacture electrical vehicle in the Europe in 2022.
As for the new services and new business models where this trend will emerge...
We are talking about smart vehicles, smart objects, smart energy, smart factories, smart buildings and smart residents.
There will be serious changes in the urbanization legislation together with the smart provinces. The latest strategy projects which we have carried out within my old company were carried out with London, Monaco and Madrid Municipalities.
There are new services and new business models which will emerge as the result of the integration of the data emerged during the travel of the people by connected vehicles with the other smart “things” at the heart for smart transformation of everything to be appealing for classical and non-classical automobile manufacturers.
There have been 500 start-ups in China for example. 2/3 of them are not interested in automobile part. A new mobility world from membership-based services to location-based services, from smart traffic method to smart discharge systems in the 10-15 years is waiting for us. We will create this new mobility world in Turkey.
